Main Duties:
It's an exciting time to join MPR News. The Managing Editor, Digital News will be a dynamic leader, working across the organization to implement new ways of working, inspire change, and take MPR News to the next phase of its digital strategy. This role is part operational and part strategic. You will be part of re-setting the vision for digital content across the newsroom, developing audience engagement and experiences via, our mobile apps, social media and developing relationship with new, digital content partners. This role will be responsible for growing and developing the team needed to build new audiences in new digital spaces and work across our organization to represent the newsroom priorities with the development team. In this role, you will be working with both traditional broadcast journalists and digital-first journalists. You will accelerate MPR News' ability to effectively navigate and lead in digital content spaces and to engage new audiences through MPR News' unique blend of curated news and in-depth storytelling, and our pursuit of what really matters locally, in the nation and the world. You will be a key member of the news leadership team which includes other key leaders, the Executive Editor, Managing Editor of Enterprise News, Managing Editor of Daily News, Program Director and others. Together, with the Executive Director of MPR News and Programming, the Chief Digital Officer, you will help create the leadership, vision, strategic planning, and administration of MRP News content team, positioning MPR News for growth on all platforms. Position Summary: The Managing Editor, Digital News leads the charge to build the overall vision and strategy for MPR News content on all digital platforms owned, earned and shared. S/he provides editorial and creative design leadership for, social, and other digital offerings, connecting MPR News content with new audiences. S/he develops strategies and tactics to ensure that MPR News content is reaching as many new audiences as possible in the many different forms it needs to take to reach the various digital platforms. S/he is the senior digital content strategist and is responsible for working with the Executive Editor, Managing Editor, Enterprise, Managing Editor of Daily News and MPR's Program Director to ensure digital opportunities are explored and executed. The Managing Editor, Digital oversees distribution of MPR News digital content offers, developing effective relationships with external partners such as audio aggregators or other producers. S/he leads MPR News digital decision-making to ensure effective use of key platforms (i.e. desktop and mobile web, connected cars, social media). This position requires a highly creative, collaborative, innovative, and disciplined leader who is well-versed in modern, digital journalism, existing and emerging digital content platforms and new products. S/he is responsible for growing and developing a team that is data-informed, audience-centric and competitive in today's fast-changing media landscape, including existing and emerging platforms to implement MPR News strategy.
Required Knowledge:
Position Responsibility: Develops and articulates the next iteration of MPR News digital strategy in collaboration with the American Public Media's Chief Digital Officer. Ensures that MPR News digital platforms execute on the MPR News mission of helping curious audiences discover and understand what matters in our community, country and the world. In partnership with Director of Digital Partnerships, our Sr. Marketing Manager using data analysis and audience research to inform and guide distribution strategies and related content choices, plus implements and maintains regular reporting systems that enables content and business decision-making across the enterprise Constantly looks for ways to improve the overall digital production process to ensure the most effective use of resources. Develops strategy to integrate online activity creatively with on-air production activity and works with other senior leaders to support training of radio staff to deliver content to digital platforms where appropriate. Actively advocates for use of new tools, products, services and marketing that will ensure rapid and sustainable scaling of digital content for new audiences. Drives digital content innovation, looking ahead on trends, using best practices and available technology to create new concepts and new ways to engage audiences; leads transformation of MPR News into a "digital-forward" entity. Identifies new digital content partnership opportunities and manages MPR News digital content for external partners. In partnership with marketing, oversees data analysis and audience metrics to inform and guide content choices, implements and maintains regular reporting systems that enable content and business decision-making across the enterprise. Develops, monitors and is accountable for budgets related to digital content activity. Hires, supervises, trains, and manages direct staff through providing work direction, constructive performance coaching, mentorship, performance meetings, and on-going feedback. Fosters a creative and productive work environment. Creates development opportunities and individualized development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth. Accountable for the performance against grants. Ensures performance against grants is part of vision/goals for appropriate areas. Other duties as assigned. Required Education and Experience: Ten years of demonstrated experience in journalism, or a related field is required. Five years of leadership experience in digital media is required. Supervisory/management experience is required - must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead. Experience leading consumer-facing interactive media, web applications and products with substantial traffic volumes and increasing scale. Experience with advertising management platforms and web analytic systems. Budget management and track record of meeting financial goals and key business objectives. Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Thorough understanding of interactive media, publishing, and other digital information and emerging communication technologies. Understanding of content and business opportunities for emerging media and distribution platforms (e.g. mobile devices). Demonstrated success building new audiences through effective digital audience engagement strategies. Passion for digital media and its capability to enrich and inform people and strengthen communities, and an understanding of its potential for communications, audience development, and service. Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues across the organization. Ability to maintain high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including objectivity, balance and fairness. Ability to represent and inspire excitement and support for MPR News digital strategy with inside and outside constituents including industry professionals and potential funders. Strong verbal presentation and writing skills. Preferred Skills and Experience: 8+ years of experience as a working journalist in a daily, national news, multi-platform environment. Experience with radio a plus but not a requirement. Highly-networked in the journalism and digital space. Interest in economics and its impact on societal issues.
