UNITY to host Regional Media Summit in Phoenix April 28-29

April 28th, 2016 All Day - April 29th, 2016

PHOENIX -- Continuing its new mission to hold regional media summits around the country, UNITY: Journalists for Diversity announced the organization will kick off the first regional summit of 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona April 28-29.

UNITY will hold a town hall meeting on immigration, followed by a regional media summit at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The media summit will cover issues around immigration, the 2016 presidential election, LGBT refugees, the Native American vote and the environment.

Russell Contreras, president of UNITY, said Phoenix is a perfect place for the group to start 2016.

“Arizona’s Urban Heart is a mirror of the nation’s demographic changes and anxieties and it is a place with strong journalism,” Contreras said. “We are excited about coming to Phoenix and working with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication.”

Public radio reporter and former NAHJ board member Nadine Arroyo Rodriguez is chairing the media regional summit and is working to finalize the agenda.

The Native American Journalists Association is partnering with UNITY for the event.

UNITY is working to finalize other regional media locations for 2016. Among the place UNITY is considering in El Paso, Texas, Chicago and Atlanta.

Last year, UNITY hosted similar regional media summits in Alabama, Detroit and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. UNITY also held a town hall meeting on anti-Arab American sentiment at the Arab American National Museum on Sept. 11.

Registration is now open for all events:
