| Kaiser Health News (KHN) is an editorially independent program of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit, private operating foundation dedicated to producing and communicating the best possible information, research and analysis on health issues. With staff and freelance reporters, columnists, editors, photographers, web producers and videographers, KHN is committed to in-depth reporting on health policy news. KHN provides this coverage on www.kaiserhealthnews.org as well as in partnership with other news organizations, including The Washington Post, USA Today, NPR and McClatchy. All material is provided free of charge. In addition to publishing in-depth articles on new developments in the health care system and on national and local health care initiatives and debates, KHN also produce the Kaiser Daily Reports. For more than a decade, these reports have provided readers with daily updates on how the media are covering U.S. health care policy. The Reporter's first responsibility each day will be to contribute to KHN's Daily Health Policy Report by working as part of a team to search for and briefly summarize health policy news coverage. In addition, the Reporter will write news and feature stories about health policy developments, including those on Capitol Hill and in the administration. He/she will also work with senior correspondents on in-depth stories. The Web Editor will supervise the reporter and this position will require working closely with others in a newsroom environment. This position is based in the Foundation's Washington, DC office and the work begins at 6:00 a.m. RESPONSIBILITIES: * Search news sources for articles about U.S. health policy * Write summaries of stories * Stay abreast of health policy news and information by consulting and/or monitoring various online and offline news sources * Generate and write original stories for KHN and its partners * Assist in maintaining the health events calendar MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: * Experience with or understanding of news websites * Two years journalism experience * Demonstrated ability to write quickly, accurately and well on deadline * Demonstrated ability to conceive of excellent news features * Demonstrated ability to work closely with a team * (Strongly preferred) Some knowledge of health policy * (Strongly preferred) Some knowledge of web publishing/production systems This is a full-time, one year term position. Continuously combines original reporting on significant and interesting news stories of the day with the work of other NPR journalists, programs and desks. The reporter is part of a small team helmed by a correspondent-news blogger. The bloggers coordinate with each other and with the Digital News staff to make the site's overall news coverage timely, accessible and webby. The reporter and correspondent also work closely with the Newscast and News Desk staffs, especially on breaking news decisions. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Produces a steady stream of long and short posts daily for NPR.org's news blog, comfortably writing in an informal, conversational style that also comports with NPR's on-air voice. Writes about the day’s news, as well as stories and interviews from NPR programs and newscasts. Helps solicit and sometimes edits contributions from others at NPR, including program hosts, correspondents, reporters, producers and editors. Consistently and enthusiastically engages with readers and the NPR community in comment threads and other social media community venues. Helps maintain daily liaison on developing stories with editors from the Digital News, News Desk and Newscast staffs, coordinating the blog's coverage with the rest of the site. Works with bloggers and others in Digital News and Digital Media to provide input on editorial, style, technical and design issues that affect NPR's journalistic integrity and online productivity.
