NAJA Education Projects
As NAJA celebrates 25 years as the voice of Native American and Canadian Aboriginal media professionals as a non-profit entity it has never lost sight of one of it’s major goals: raising the next generation of scouts, storytellers and leaders.
With that goal in mind NAJA has promoted and staged the development of programming and the creation of an experience that could change the lives of young Native Americans through our collaborations called “Project Phoenix” (High school students) and “Native Voices” (College
students).
During this collaboration, students work with professionals in their fields of study (Radio, Television, Newspaper, and Online). Not only do students get experience and tips from the mentors, but they also learn what it is like to work in a newsroom setting. NAJA’s base student curriculum also includes literacy and its impacts on our students’ lives, their community and the experience of civic leadership and citizenship.
NAJA invites all Native American youth nationwide to submit an application to attend either of these truly unique and intellectually invigorating projects.
Every year our NAJA students impress community members and our general NAJA members with their hard work and feature stories of the region we choose for our annual conference.
The students’ work is showcased during the conference and after through a newspaper publication, a radio program or a news broadcast video and all are plugged into the NAJA website.
Please note: the number of students who can take advantage of the golden opportunity of the NAJA student projects is directly linked to the generosity and kindness of our sponsors.
