As a nonprofit, NAJA continually looks for resources to help us support journalists through scholarships, fellowships and other programs. Income is derived from several different sources, but in the past few years there has been heavily reliance on small, one-year grants. As part of our five-year strategic plan, we would like to build a stronger base to strengthen our programs and implement new ones.
Your support is needed. The organization has had record growth in the past few years and continues to increase its scholarship awards, student programs and grants for professional development. NAJA is also nearing its 25th anniversary soon and would like to implement other programs, such as a management fellowship.
We’re looking for donors who would like to help us:
• Grow our scholarship fund
• Grow our endowment
• Make a general contribution (grants do not pay for accounting, employee
salaries or employee taxes)
• Would like to become lifetime members (see below)
Although tribal media continues to grow, Native journalists in mainstream media in both print and broadcast continue be severely underrepresented. Help NAJA support all journalists. NAJA...Raising the next generation of storytellers.
As a non-profit organization, NAJA relies heavily on charitable contributions. Programs and services have been totally dependent on funding received from foundations or media companies from year to year. Most of NAJA's foundation support are one-time only grants, placing the burden on the organization to continuously look for new or alternative funding.
Recent economic conditions have posed a significant challenge to the organization's fundraising efforts, with traditional funding sources scaling back on their contributions.
The endowment is needed as a stabilizing force in the organization's future, giving it the ability to weather economic downturns and further consolidation in the industry. Interest from the endowment is projected to help the organization pay for needed programs in those years.
This is not intended to replace fundraising for new initiatives worthy of foundation consideration, nor revenue-generating activities such as the annual convention.
Who should support this Endowment?
NAJA looks to all its members, beneficiaries and allies who support the long-term vision of NAJA's mission:
• Board members • Individual members
• Industry leaders • Media companies
• Foundations
Please join other NAJA supporters in making a pledge to the endowment. Your support will let others know the importance of keeping our programs alive for many more decades.
